Surviving the "Summer Sleep Spiral": How to Help Your Little One Sleep Soundly This Season
Help your baby sleep better this summer with parent-tested tips to beat heat, longer daylight, and bedtime struggles for cooler, more restful nights.
Summer is finally here! It’s the season of park picnics, poolside parties, and family vacations. But while the days are filled with sunshine and fun, the nights can sometimes tell a different story. If your baby or toddler has been fighting bedtime or waking up more often lately, take a deep breath: you are absolutely not alone.
Here at KeaBabies, we recently conducted the "Summer Sleep Spiral" survey, and the results confirmed what so many of us are experiencing. A whopping 78% of parents say that summer negatively impacts their child's sleep, and 72% agree that summer bedtime is simply more difficult than any other season.
So, why does the most fun season of the year cause so much sleep stress, and more importantly, how can we fix it? Let’s dive into the common summer sleep culprits and some practical, parent-approved tips for a calmer, cooler night.
The Real Reasons Behind the Summer Sleep Spiral
When we asked parents what was disrupting their little ones' sleep the most, three major culprits stood out:
-
Longer daylight hours (60%): Those beautifully long days actually delay your child's natural melatonin production, making it harder for them to wind down.
-
Hot temperatures (55%): Unlike adults, young children have a harder time regulating their body temperature, making ambient heat a big contributor to nighttime wakings.
-
Different schedules and activities (53%): Summer vacations and later sunsets can easily throw off even the most well-established routines.
When our babies don't sleep, we don't sleep. More than half of parents surveyed are losing one to three or more hours of sleep every single night during the warmer months, leaving 75% feeling stressed and overwhelmed.
Parent-Tested Tips for Better Summer Sleep
If you're among the 50% of parents who have been endlessly searching online for summer sleep advice, we've got you covered! Here are the most effective strategies that parents rely on to get bedtime back on track:
1. Create a Cool, Calm Environment Pediatric guidelines recommend keeping your baby’s room between 68°F and 72°F. It's no surprise that 70% of parents find success simply by dropping the room temperature, and 73% rely on fans or cooling devices.
2. Block Out the Sun With the sun staying up well past bedtime, 67% of parents swear by blackout curtains to block out the light, simulate nighttime, and encourage that sleepy melatonin to kick in.
3. Switch to Breathable Sleepwear When it comes to summer sleep, breathability is the top priority for 77% of parents. Ditch the heavy blankets and opt for lightweight sleepwear, such as cooling pajamas or a breathable sleep sack. KeaBabies Lyra Muslin Swaddle Blankets are a great option to keep your baby cozy and safe without the risk of overheating.
Temperature regulating sheets, such as The Isla Fitted Crib Sheet, are soft, breathable, & gentle on babies skin.
4. Lean on Soothing Bedtime Routines A cool bath before bed is used by 37% of parents to help lower their child's core body temperature. Gentle, organic baby washcloths, such as the KeaBabies Cami Washcloths, are made with a dual-layer soft muslin cotton & bamboo terry viscose, and are perfect for protecting baby’s skin. Follow that up by turning on a white noise machine to drown out the sounds of neighborhood summer activities and keep the sleep environment peaceful.
